The Main School

The Curriculum

The Curriculum is broad based with emphasis on the core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science, together with French, History, Geography, Religious Studies, Music, Art, Design and Technology, and Information Technology. Latin is introduced for ten year olds. Physical Education and Sport complete the all-round education at Smallwood.

The Arts

The Music Department provides many opportunities. Every child has at least one class lesson per week. Over half the pupils have individual lessons on a wide range of instruments and many join the orchestra or other ensembles. The Chapel Choir leads worship and travels further afield to sing in services, concerts and music festivals, at which considerable success has been achieved.

Over the years a wide range of dramatic productions has been performed, including 'James and the Giant Peach', 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe', and 'Alice in Wonderland'.

The art room, including a small pottery section, is a joy to behold, always full of a colourful assortment of artistic creations.

Sport and Clubs

Sport plays an important role in life at Smallwood Manor and fixtures take place against many other schools.

In the Michaelmas Term, the boys play Rugby Union while the girls play hockey. After Christmas in the Lent Term, the boys switch to hockey and football, the girls to netball. Cricket is the main sporting activity for boys in the Summer Term and rounders for girls; both boys and girls compete in track and field events culminating in an athletics sports day in June.

The indoor heated swimming pool is used throughout the year. Pupils are encouraged to improve their 'personal best' times and, as well as an interhouse competition, events are held against other schools.

There are opportunities for more individual activities such as badminton, table-tennis, snooker, and chess

Club activities, including computing, art and craft, cookery, drama and chess, provide additional stimulation for the children.

Pastoral Care

During their time at Smallwood, all pupils have a form tutor who provides pastoral care and, in addition to the Headmaster and Chaplain, is a point of contact for parents.

Chapel

Smallwood Manor has its own modern School Chapel set amongst 'The Cedars', which provide such an inspirational view at its east end. The Headmaster is an ordained priest and as Chaplain has responsibility for worship in Chapel, Christian teaching and the pastoral care of the whole community.

The school meets every day for morning prayer, with pupils encouraged to prepare and lead worship themselves. The main weekly service is the Eucharist when there is frequently a guest preacher. Chapel worship is rarely dull — a rich variety of readings, drama sketches, musical contributions, and art enliven the seasons of the Church year and help make the Christian message a faith to be lived out within the school community.
